The Business of Cities worked with the Committee for Melbourne to deliver Benchmarking Melbourne 2025, a comprehensive outside-in assessment of how Greater Melbourne is performing and perceived in a fast-changing global landscape. Drawing on more than 150 international benchmarks and 700 indicators, the report shows Melbourne consolidating its status as a highly liveable and globally connected city, with standout strengths in wellbeing, talent appeal, cultural experience and emerging sectors such as life sciences.
The analysis also highlights clear pressures and strategic choices for the decade ahead. Melbourne faces a widening productivity gap, intensifying industry competition, a slower recovery than many peers, and a brand profile that has not kept pace with its underlying strengths. The report identifies the priorities needed to sustain long-term competitiveness — strengthening specialisation, improving metropolitan connectivity, elevating the city centre experience, and deepening Melbourne’s global visibility and influence.
