Dr Tim Moonen is Co-Founder and Managing Director of The Business of Cities. For 15 years he has worked with and advised more than 100 cities, companies, districts and global institutions, where his international expertise helps to inform long-term strategies, leadership, narrative and policy choices.

He has collaborated closely with many of the world’s leading urban thought leadership teams at OECD, World Bank, ULI and Brookings Institution, and co-authored more than 50 reports and books on city competitiveness, innovation, governance and performance.

Alongside his international research leadership, Tim regularly participates in and chairs senior advisory boards and stakeholder engagements on behalf of cities and businesses. He also teaches executive-level education for international companies and universities.

A Visiting Lecturer at UCL, Tim has a PhD in Politics and International Studies from the University of Bristol. He also holds degrees from the University of Cambridge and the Universidad Europea de Madrid.

Borane Gille leads international research projects on urban innovation ecosystems, regeneration, branding and international positioning. She has led research on various city and regional strategy and brand building exercises, for cities such as Manchester, Glasgow, Tel Aviv and Amsterdam.

Her work also focuses on regional economic development, evaluating growth and investment opportunities in cities around the world, assessing cities’ responses to global urban agendas, and analysing innovation and firm dynamics.

Borane has a 1st-class Land Economy degree from the University of Cambridge.

Ezra Rawitsch currently focuses on research production and content development on behalf of global clients, bringing special expertise in geospatial data and visualisation. Raised in Los Angeles, Ezra previously worked in urban development and policy in New York and Brussels before relocating to London. 

He holds a BA and an MS in geography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and KU Leuven, respectively.

Emma Frost

Emma focuses on strategy, business development and client delivery.

Emma is highly experienced in delivering integrated urban regeneration and innovation systems; combining physical development and masterplanning with socio-economic and environmentally sustainable programme delivery.

Emma’s works on all aspects of innovation economies, specialising on governance, business models, operating plans and inclusive innovation. She brings with her direct delivery experience of establishing and running SHIFT – the innovation district based at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park London. Her previous work on the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Legacy involved extensive masterplanning and leading on sustainability, community and business development.

Alongside her role with The Business of Cities, Emma is Chair and founder of the UK Innovation Districts Group, a teaching fellow for the London & Partners Open Innovation programme, advisory board member for Loughborough University, London Prosperity Board member, and Associate Director for Connected Places Catapult. She is also an RSA fellow, a co-founder of Echo, a board member for Kingston First BID and Trustee of the One Percent Scheme.

Maurita’s interests lie in data visualisation and information design. She holds a Masters of Biomedical Communications from the University of Toronto. Before joining The Business of Cities, Maurita worked in the medical communications industry where she specialised in the design and visualisation of information within medical communication tools and resources.

Emily leads The Business of Cities workstream on City Identity, Reputation and Visibility.

Emily Moir has worked with cities in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific to help distil their unique DNA and narrative. She has also led research on groundbreaking projects fine-tuning the language and story around urban density, and the narrative of global businesses as they engage with the promise of cities. Before joining The Business of Cities Emily worked as a solicitor in a City of London law firm, where she specialised in commercial real estate. She has also worked for the property developer Lend Lease, and at The Young Foundation, a centre for social innovation based in East London. Emily holds a first class degree in Geography from the University of Oxford, and a Graduate Diploma in Law from BPP London.

Daniel Thomas

Data Associate

Dan harnesses computational methods allied to metropolitan development practice to understand & track urban dynamics.

Dan oversees management of open-source datasets to inform policy-relevant analysis of more than 2,000 city districts, innovation eco-systems, and metropolitan infrastructure systems. He is also responsible for data visualisation and development of front-end platforms for cities and businesses. Dan studied Geography and Geocomputation at King’s College London and was previously an intern at Google.
